How to Take the Perfect Selfie

You can never go wrong with a selfie! Here are some great tips on how to make your campaign selfies perfect.

Lighting is Key: Natural lighting always makes for the best selfies. If you can’t take your selfie during the daytime, make sure you find a well-lit room. Position yourself so that you are facing the main light source. For example, if you are outside during the daytime, be sure to face the sun. If you are taking your selfie without natural lighting, make sure you get close enough to the light source so that it illuminates your face. This makes sure every feature of your face is visible and your skin will look flawless without any shadows. Lighting improves the clarity and quality of all your photos, so this is definitely the most important tip in improving Instagram posts!

Ambassador Pro-Tip: If you have a ring light, use it for all of your selfies. Holding your phone in the center of the ring light ensures that it illuminates all the features of your face perfectly. It mimics the natural lighting and highlights your face. If you don’t have a ring light, an adjustable desk lamp has a similar effect!

Avoid Flash on Phones: Using the flash on cell phones (especially the front-facing flash) decreases the quality of the photo substantially. You want your selfies to be clear, not grainy or blurry. If you hold your phone too close to your face, the flash will give you an unnatural skin tone or make you look extremely pale. If you hold your phone too far away, the flash won’t pick up your figure, and your picture will appear washed-out.

Avoid Third-Party Camera Apps: Using your phone’s built-in camera app is always the best option for maintaining the quality of your photos.

Focus the camera perfectly: If you are using a phone, be sure to tap the screen where you want to focus your photo. Tap around until you find the exact place that focuses the photo and optimizes the lighting.

Play around with angles: Taking a selfie from different angles can add a nice touch to the final product. Different angles accentuate different features of your face, so switch it up to make each photo unique.

Ambassador Pro-Tip: If you’re taking a full body picture, have the person take the photo stand or squat towards the ground and tilt the camera slightly upwards. This angle will make your legs look longer and you look taller!

Have a Simple Background: You should be the focus of your photo. If you have too much going on in the background, it can can take away from the main point of your photo. When trying to select a background, explore your city to look for walls, simple scenic backdrops, tapestries, etc. to take your photo in front of.

Change Your Facial Expressions: You don’t necessarily have to sit in front of the camera and smile. Smiling is great, but it’s not the only way to take a perfect photo! Switch it up from time to time-- you look away from the camera, look down, take a candid, etc. This can make your Instagram feed unique and will keep your followers interested. Even the subtlest changes are noticeable!

Take Lots of Photos: You will never get a perfect photo on the first try. If you take lots of photos making subtle changes to your facial expressions, the camera angles, positioning, and the lighting, you will have a lot more to work with. Don’t hesitate to take more than 20 photos in one take! After you’re done, you can pick your favorite one. This is much easier than only having 3 or 4 to choose from-- that way, you don’t need to reshoot your photos!

How to Take the Perfect Flat Lay

If you’d rather not take a selfie, not a problem. Flat lay photos are another great way to show off a product in an artsy and distinctive way! We’ve listed out the keys to perfecting the flat lay.

Choose the Perfect Background: A simple white never fails, but other bright colors can work too! Just make sure that the color of your product and the color of the background don’t clash in the photo. You want to pick complimentary colors.

Have Other Objects: Other objects can be a great way to add an extra pop to your photo. Just make sure you don’t add too many that it takes away from the photo! Here are some suggestions for great other accessories to add to your photos:

  • Sunglasses
  • Flowers or Plants
  • Mug
  • Books or Magazines
  • Food
  • Patterned Notebooks
  • Upside-Down Phone (Displaying your Case)
  • Wallet or Purse
  • Keychain
  • Laptop
  • Shoes
  • Folded Clothes
  • Jewelry or Watch

Always keep in mind what you’re promoting! If you’re promoting a healthy lifestyle related product, maybe include an acai bowl and sneakers to emphasize a healthy lifestyle. The options are endless, so be creative!

Spacing is Key: You want the objects in your photo to be spaced out perfectly and neatly. Adding space between products makes them pop and grabs a viewer’s attention. Don’t leave too much space though-- you want the layout to appear natural, but organized. If you leave too much space between objects, it will look unnatural and unpleasing to the eye. Find the happy medium.

Taking the Photo: Make sure that you position your camera over all of your objects, aligning the phone perfectly with the flat surface. Try not to tip the phone at all and be extremely still when taking it to avoid messing up the angle of the photo. If the photo is at an angle, it will look unnatural.

Ambassador Pro-Tip: Choose to put your accessories on the floor--against a cute rug or a plain flat surface. Then, take the photo from standing up or squatting. This can make it much easier to align the photo. If you use a table, it can be hard to look directly over the objects to see if the alignment is precise.

How to Take the Perfect Boomerang

Boomerangs are a great way to catch a follower’s eye. We’ve listed out some advice to make your Boomerang stand out from the rest.

Hold the Camera Still: When making a Boomerang, you want to focus on one small action or movement. Make sure that you position the camera perfectly with proper lighting, and then make sure that it remains still. Most people are tempted to move the camera, in a back in forth motion when doing this, but this can make the final product appear too fast or confusing. It’s important to keep your phone still, and that you make all the movements.

Get Creative: Creativity is really the key to making your posts unique. Spin around, walk towards the camera, flip your hair, toss your product in the air… Find a small movement or action that matches what you’re promoting. Be yourself, and be creative!

How to Edit Photos Like a Pro

Editing is the key to finalizing and perfecting your photo. These little tips and tricks will help you make your post reach its utmost potential!

Pick a Great App: Instagram is a great platform for posting your photos, but not for editing. Their preset filters often decrease your picture quality and make them look grainy. Use some of our other favorite editing apps to increase the quality of your photos!

  • VSCO - free
  • A Color Story - free
  • FaceTune - paid
  • Snapseed - free
  • UltraPop - free
  • Layout - free

Filters: Filtering a photo works wonders—but be sure not to filter the it too much! Here are some helpful tips on how to make your photos look amazing. First, choose your filter. Browse through the filters on your editing app, selecting a few that may look nice on your photo. Try to pick filters that are similar to the previous ones you used so that your Instagram feed can flow nicely. Once you find a filter with a color scheme you like, select it. Once you’ve selected your filter, it’s time to adjust the filter settings. You want to avoid over-filtering your photos. If the filter appears too apparent or decreases the clarity of the photo, click on the filter, and decrease the percentage of filter applied on the photo. Filters are meant to add a nice pop of color to a photo, not diminish the quality. Avoid over-filtering at all costs-- it looks tacky and can ruin an otherwise great photo!

Use Other Editing Features: Sometimes filters can do just the trick, and the photo’s don’t need any editing at all. However, maybe you don’t like using filters and want a more natural edit or your filtered photo just isn’t quite perfect yet. These few simple editing corrections can directly improve your Instagram posts! Play around with the saturation, skin tone, exposure, contrast, and temperature settings. You don’t want to oversaturate your photo or make it look too edited, but subtle adjustments can make a big difference. Contrast and saturation are useful in making the colors pop, and exposure helps brighten the picture. Perfecting the editing process all depends on what you have to work with, so test out these features and figure out what looks best!
